Who are we?

Makanai Farm is a 1 acre, no till, CSA vegetable farm located off of Highway 9 right outside of Sedro Woolley. We started the farm three years ago with a focus on regenerative, organic growing practices, Japanese vegetables, and educating and building community through food.

Makanai means “staff meal” or “family meal” in Japanese. Makanai embodies so much of what we try to do on our farm. We want to feed the community that we love and we want each and every person to feel that in the food we grow. We want our farm to grow the Japanese vegetables that Koji’s mom put into his lunch bentos she used to make him everyday until he was 18. We want our farm to be a place that prioritizes the health of the soil and the people who are working on it. We want our farm to be a place where folks can gather, share a meal that won’t always be pretty, but will always be sure to use lots of vegetables and care.

3 month farm internship: We are looking for someone who is able to work full time (35-40 hours a week) from mid June through mid September, start date is negotiable. Intern will be paid a stipend $2000 a month ($6,000 total), as well as staff lunches, access to fresh veggies, and vacation time. In addition, interns will receive a general curriculum based around regenerative growing practices, no till farming, and running a CSA garden. Internship description

The goal of this internship is to give a comprehensive idea of what the day to day operations of a no till, small scale market vegetable farm looks like, how to make compost and soil amendments on the farm, and to pose the question: why is farming important in the context of other social issues including income inequality, health care, education, the environment, and racism. The internship will include hands-on work experience in every aspect of running a CSA vegetable garden from seed to harvest and also monthly readings and meetings to reflect and talk through what we are all learning throughout the season.

No prior farm experience is needed, though preferred. Interns will have to be able to perform physical labor on a daily basis. Tasks may include but are not limited to: seeding, transplanting, hand weeding, compost building, moving silage tarps, harvesting, veggie washing/packaging, irrigation setup and monitoring, occasional small construction projects, etc. We do our best to diversify tasks to mitigate injury and to prioritize self care throughout our work day. We want to make our farm as accessible as possible but farming is a demanding job on the body. Interns are expected to show up on time and work hard. But most of all, we are looking for interns who are excited and curious to learn more about where our food comes from and why how we grow it matters beyond our one acre.
